The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Economic Crimes Task Force culminated an investigation with the arrest of 20-year-old Tony Jerome Torbert Jr. of Merritt Island on Thursday, April 8, 2015. Torbert was charged with the Possession of Counterfeit Currency with Intent to Defraud. The charge carries a possible 20-year Federal Prison sentence. Torbert was arraigned in Federal Court on Friday where he was released on bond. The investigation began in February after the Sheriff’s Office received a Crimeline tip in reference to an individual on Craigslist who was selling counterfeit currency under an ad titled, “Legit Counterfeit $$.” With the assistance of the Sheriff’s Office Special Investigation Unit, the Economic Crimes Tasks Force conducted three undercover purchases from Torbert Jr. over the past month. On April 8, 2015, Torbert Jr. was arrested after completing a fourth sale. While Torbert Jr. was being arrested, a simultaneous search warrant was executed at his residence. During the search, a printer, counterfeit currency and computer were among evidentiary items seized. Due to the seriousness of the crime, the United States Secret Service was contacted during the investigation. Agents from Secret Service then assisted the Sheriff’s Office culminate the investigation.
