A Virginia man, who was alarmed to see his local grocery store proudly offering expired meats for sale, contacted his state's Department of Agriculture to complain, but he was told the store was well in its right to sell meats past its sell-by date. Thinking the state of Virginia has lost its mind, Albert Gam contacted the USDA and received a very similar response - there is no federal regulation requiring store owners to remove meat or chicken by a certain date. According to one state official, stores are not required by law to put any date on meat packaging, but if they do put on a sell-by date, they cannot change or modify it. Somewhere, vegetarians are besides themselves with glee.
