Earlier this week, WLNE reporter Abbey Niezgoda went to a home in Providence, Rhode Island to get reaction from the mother of a 16-year-old girl who was shot in the back at a graduation party on Sunday. The mother, identified as Melissa Lawrence, said "OK, that's good," then hurled a rock at Abbey's photographer's head. Crazy, we know! As the crew was attempting to leave, Melissa came out wielding a baseball bat then instructed her two dogs to attack. Abbey suffered a dog bite to her forearm. Melissa was arrested and charged with two counts of felony assault with a dangerous weapon.
We have a feeling Melissa knows the gunman or is related to him, hence her reaction to the news crew's presence, but that's just conjecture. Here's some background information. The graduation party was being held at Melissa's home on Sunday. According to cops, a fight erupted after a 17-year-old boy "disrespected" Melissa. The teen left the home and later returned with two others and a .38 caliber handgun and shot Melissa's daughter, Ny'asia Lawrence, in the lower back. She was hospitalized and later released.
