Lawyer Arrested at Courthouse for Possession of Weed
High-profile defense attorney Regina Criswell was arrested Thursday after courthouse officials reported finding a bag of marijuana and a chrome pipe in her purse. Her defense, according to the Sheriff's Office: The items belong to a client.
Criswell, 50, told a security guard that she knew the marijuana and paraphernalia were in her purse and that she was holding it for a client, said Deputy Ino Badillo, a spokesman for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. Badillo said the items were discovered at a screening station at an entrance of the courthouse.
He said Criswell was arrested and then released after posting $500 bail on a charge of misdemeanor possession of less than 2 grams of marijuana.
Cliff Herberg, the county's first assistant district attorney, was surprised to learn of the arrest.
“She goes through security all the time,” Herberg said. “This is the first time I've ever heard of this happening.”
Herberg said Criswell is ethically obliged to tell her clients about the charge because it's a potential conflict of interest.
He said Criswell is scheduled to appear in court June 22 to answer to the charge.
Despite the arrest, Herberg said Criswell isn't in danger of losing her license if convicted on the misdemeanor offense.
Criswell obtained her law license in 1988 and has a private law practice in Helotes, according to the State Bar of Texas.
