Trial of Woman Accused of Sexually Assaulting Girls at Oprah's School Underway

A security guard at the prestigious Oprah Winfrey Academy for Girls witnessed a former dormitory matron disappearing into pupils rooms after “lights out”.

Norah Sizane told the Sebokeng Magistrate’s Court that Tiny Virginia Makopo, 28, pictured, a resident dormitory matron accused of sexual misconduct, would visit the girls in dormitories to which she was not assigned.

Sizane claimed Makopo always visited after “lights out” at 9.30pm and disappeared into the girls’ rooms.

Makopo, who appeared relaxed in court, has pleaded not guilty to 14 charges, including assault, indecent assault and crimen injuria against six students aged between 13 and 14.

The security guard testified that Makopo would often visit the dormitory she was guarding when the children were sleeping.

“She visited for a long time,” said Sizane. “I worked two days of night shift in a week and I would patrol the corridors of dorm1 on an hourly basis when I heard strange sounds."

The court has since heard the testimony of a teacher who taught one of Makopo's alleged victims. The teacher claimed the girls were forced to watch pornographic videos.

She described to the court how one student confided in her, saying that Makopo came into her room one night and forced her to look at porn.

The court also heard testimony from state witness Jennifer Bowley, a technical manager at the academy, who said the security system, which used access cards to restrict access to the girls’ dormitories, was problematic.

Doors were on occasion left unlocked, she said.
