A 27-year-old Oregon woman is facing murder charges after a pregnant woman was cut open and her fetus removed, according to several news outlets. The fetus also died.
Korena Roberts (pictured, left) is accused of killing 21-year-old Heather Snively, who was eight-months pregnant and had moved from Maryland to Tigard, Ore., a few weeks ago, The Oregonian reports.
Snively's body was found in the crawl space of Roberts' Beaverton-area home Friday after firefighters answered a call for a newborn in distress. When they arrived they found Roberts' boyfriend trying unsuccessfully to revive the newborn. The baby boy was rushed to a hospital and pronounced dead.
Roberts claimed the baby was hers, but doctors said later she had not given birth.
The Washington County Sheriff's Department said Snively was looking for baby clothes and met Roberts through a Craigslist posting. Snively's mother, Heidi Kidd of St. Albans, W.Va., said her daughter and Roberts befriended each other and chatted online.
An autopsy determined that Snively died from blunt-force and sharp wounds.
"At this time, it has not been determined if she died because of head wounds she received or as a result of cutting injuries she received to her abdomen," the sheriff's office said.
It has not yet been determined when or how her baby died.
Roberts is being charged with murdering Snively, but not for the death of the unborn child. This has prompted local lawmakers to draft a bill would ultimately hold Roberts accountable for the death of Snively’s unborn child.
