North Korea Frees US Journalists

Former President Bill Clinton's surprise trip to North Korea today to free detained journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee was successful.

North Korean media say leader Kim Jong Il has pardoned the journalists and ordered their release, reports the Associated Press.

Further reports say former president Clinton met with the two journalists and they may leave North Korea as early as tonight on the same plane as the former president.

Laura and Euna were arrested after straying into the country while they were reporting on the Chinese-North Korean border. They were later convicted and sentenced to 12 years hard labor.

North Korea had two demands of the United States: A visit from a high-profile emissary and an apology. (Secretary of State Hillary Clinton apologized on behalf of the journalists a few weeks ago.)
