Ophelia De'lonta, an inmate at the all-male Buckingham Correctional Center in Virginia, has filed a federal lawsuit claiming the state has failed its duty to provide adequate medical care because it won't give her the operation. (Last April, another transsexual inmate filed a similar lawsuit in California). She says the surgery is needed to treat her gender identity disorder. Born Michael Stokes, Ophelia says she will continue to try to kill herself unless her wishes are granted. Case in point: After a jailer referred to her as "he" on Oct. 8. Ophelia said she felt repulsed and helpless and attempted to castrate herself with three disposable razors from the prison commissary. Using knowledge gained from mail-order anatomy books, the 50-year-old cut on and off for three hours before she passed out. It took 21 stitches to repair the damage. Ophelia says she will continue to try to kill herself if her wishes aren't granted. BTW: She's serving a 70 year sentence for robbery, drugs, weapons and other charges.
