Simon Cowell Won't Settle for Number 2

Simon Cowell can't make up his mind. First he acquired the Hollywood disease known as exhaustion, then he hinted that he will quit American Idol. Now, he says he will quit, but only if the show's ratings dip.

On average, 22 million watch Idol each night, but if the show doesn't remain in the number one spot, he'll bail.

"Being number one is verging on an obsession with me. I don't like being number two. I don't mind when you start at number 10 - people don't always go on as number one - and you've got somewhere to go. But if you're at the point you've reached it, of course you want to stay there," Simon says. "Being number one is verging on an obsession with me. I don't like being number two. Frankly, we don't know anyone who will watch if Simon isn't around.
