An Italian man is lucky to be alive after he was hit by a stray bullet in the head as people fired into the air on New Year's Eve in Naples. The .22-calibre round entered the right side of Darco Sangermano head's, passed behind his eye, hit a bone in his nose and finally lodged in his nostril, before being sneezed out in hospital.
"This was a very strange case and the first of its kind that I am aware of, certainly in Italy, I have never heard anything like it before," Professor Berrone said. "He was a very lucky man, he could have been easily killed. The bullet went through his temple, behind his eye, entered the nasal cavity and then became lodged in his nostril before he sneezed it out. Amazing! He needed surgery just to clean up the wound and get rid of the bone fragments but other than that he was fine and we expect him to make a full recovery, he won't even lose the sight of his eye."
Two others were hit with stray bullets that night; one died.
