A man who pleaded guilty to grand theft for stealing 1,000 pounds of avocados -- worth an estimated $1,500 -- from a grove in Bonsall, Calif. was sentenced to three years probation on Thursday. Barron Stein, 44, of Fallbrook was captured on surveillance cameras stealing the fruit on March 15. He told police he was going to sell the fruit to help support his family. As part of his three-year probation sentence, Barron is banned from possessing more than 10 avocados at any time. “Somebody can have guacamole, they can avocados on their sandwiches, but they cannot have a commercial quantity of avocados on their person,” said agriculture crime prosecutor Liz Silva. “It would be a violation of their probation.” If caught with more than 10 avocados, Barron could face up to six months in jail.
