Actress Mischa Barton Sues Her Mother For Exploitation
Mischa Barton, 29, has sued her mother and momager, Nuala Barton, alleging she stole money that the former star of the television series The OC earned throughout her career and made endorsement deals that damaged the actress's reputation. According to the lawsuit, which was filed today in Los Angeles, Mischa says Nual systematically withheld earnings and exploited her fame. Back in 2003 at age 17, Mischa was one of the stars of The OC, but her character was killed off in its third season. She wanted to focus on movie roles, but has only appeared in several small films and a short-lived CW series; she has garnered no high-profile roles. She has, however, been a fixture in the fashion world, appearing at shows for top designers in New York and Paris, and has endorsed beauty products and collaborated on her own line of fashion accessories. According to the lawsuit, Mischa claims her mother "had absolutely no experience or training" in talent management when she took on her daughter's career; She claims her mother doled out an allowance on a sporadic basis. Mischa alleges Nuala induced her to buy a Beverly Hills home for $7.8 million in 2006 but she structured the purchase to assign herself half-ownership of the property. Mischa says her mother kicked her out the home and she's no longer welcome there. She says her mother lied about her compensation for acting in the horror film The Hoarder so she could pocket the difference, on top of her management fee and Mischa says she was entered into endorsement contracts unknowingly, including enterprises like a Mischa Barton handbag line and Mischa Barton fashion boutique in London without compensation.
