An off-duty NYC police officer was charged with assault after shooting her girlfriend early Monday morning during a drag out brawl which erupted after a suspicious text message.
According to the New York Daily News, Ekeythia Dunston, 32, (pictured, right) and her 42-year-old girlfriend, Erica LeGall are raising two sons. The couple returned to their Harlem apartment Monday after a night of drinking when Erica received a text message from another woman about 3:15am. Then all hell broke loose.
"[The fight] escalated...to the bedroom," Assistant District Attorney David Smith said in Manhattan Criminal Court. Investigators believe LeGall got the upper hand, snatched a clothes iron and bashed Dunston with it several times on the head, according to prosecutors. Dunston managed to free herself and grab her service revolver - and then fired a pair of shots. LeGall was hit in the thigh and shoulder, officials said. "[Dunston] was severely beaten with the iron," said her defense lawyer, Edgar De Leon. "Her head was almost split open." "It was a domestic dispute that escalated and she had to defend herself," he said. "I think it is safe to say this relationship is over." De Leon claimed the low bail - and the lack of an attempted murder charge - shows that prosecutors believe Dunston's claim of self-defense. He also said the couple's friend would back up Dunston's story.Erica, who was struck in the shoulder and the thigh was taken to a local hospital where she's in stable condition. She'll be charged with assault when she's released.
