When Houston Animal Control Refused to 'Control' a Woman's Possum Problem, She Took Matters into Her Own Hands

For a decade, Houston, Texas resident Theresa Vandiver has been dealing with opossums "tearing up" her 100-year-old home and "upsetting" her dog. Until recently, the city's animal control agency would collect the animals she caught in traps and released them to the wild -- but the agency has since changed it's policy. When she called them to come collect her latest catch, they told her they don’t consider possums dangerous so they stopped picking them up four months ago. Uh-oh! Fed up, she drove to City Hall (possum, in tow) this afternoon and released it under the Christmas tree installed for the Mayor’s tree-lighting ceremony tonight. She says she plans to continue doing so until the city reinstates the old policy. She adds: "If I get the mayor’s address I’ll send her one for Christmas."
