Man Killed For Flipping TV Channels

David Matthew Young, 29, was charged with murder, armed robbery and prohibited possession of prescription hydrocodone yesterday after he stabbed 54-year-old Martin Vasser, 54, seven or eight times in the back in his Winter Haven, Florida home. David (pictured) told police he got stabby because the wheelchair-bound man kept flipping TV channels.
During questioning by police, Young said he had known Vasser for about three years. He told investigators he became "very agitated" by Vasser's television channel changing, an arrest report said. Police said Young grabbed a knife from the countertop and pulled Vasser from his wheelchair. "Young stated that once Vasser was on the ground, he grabbed him and stabbed him seven to eight times in the back," an arrest affidavit written by Detective Mark Zagar said. Young told Vasser as he was killing him that he was doing him a favor, the report said. The weapon had not been recovered Wednesday, but police investigators are currently at the county landfill looking for the knife, police said Thursday morning. Police Chief Gary Hester said the motives for a slaying these days sometimes don't make sense, including this one. "Changing the channels on the television doesn't seem like a very good reason to kill somebody," Hester said.
David, who's homeless and and lived in woods, often visited Martin. Cops say after he viciously killed the man who took care of him, David then stole the Martin's hydrocodone pills and tried to sell them to the man's neighbors. If there ever was a reason for the death penalty, this would be it.
