Man Charged With Killing AJ Jewell Says TV Star Had a Gun, Started Fight

Last weekend's tragic death of Ashley "AJ" Jewell, the ex-fiance of new Atlanta "housewife" Kandi Burruss stunned everyone.

As we're reported, police have charged Frederick Richardson, 45, with voluntary manslaughter after the two men got into a fight in the parking lot of the strip club where they worked. AJ, 34, was struck across the head and later died at a hospital.

Now, new information is trickling in as to a possible motive and the events leading up to AJ's death.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the fight began because AJ felt Frederick didn't respect him.

“They had some words about a business decision,” said Lt. Keith Meadows, head of Atlanta Police’s homicide unit. “It seems like it was a struggle for power over the club....Apparently they just didn’t like each other,” Meadows said. “AJ felt like he deserved more respect from Richardson and it wasn’t given to him.”

Frederick, who is still locked up, says AJ was the aggressor, it was AJ who started the fight.

Frederick's attorney, Dennis Scheib, told the newspaper that AJ had been sitting in his client's office with a gun earlier in the day on Friday. AJ allegedly told Frederick, "I've got something for you," at that time.

Then again, on Friday night, in the parking lot, "AJ comes out and says, 'I've got something for you.' He takes off his shirt … and hits Richardson twice," Scheib said.

Frederick maintains that he left the scene of the fight while AJ was still alive. "AJ was walking away, he wasn't beaten to death," the lawyer added.

(If the suspect's version of events are true, then that might explain AJ's rambling tweets that Friday.)

His lawyer hasn't said it, but we see them going the self-defense route should this go to trial. Scheib is also pushing to have the current charges dismissed because no cause of death has been determined.

According to police, both men have had run-ins with the law in the past.

AJ had arrests on theft-related charges. In 2006 he was arrested for battery and domestic violence and in 2003 he was arrested on aggravated assault and firearms charges.

Police say Frederick's criminal history is "extensive." In 2001 and 2003, for instance, he was arrested for battery and obstruction of police officers.

Frederick is currently being held on charges of voluntary manslaughter without bond until his next court appearance on Oct. 20.

In my opinion this Frederick character is lying on a man who can't defend himself because he caused or was instrumental in his untimely death.

Its unfortunate that black men hold grudges against each other and our of fear or jealously look to harm another. In my opinion I feel that this man is lying on AJ Jewell. I do not believe the man would carry a loaded weapon into a club. He did not appear to be a thug on the show HWOA and now that he has passed on he cannot defend himself thanks to Frederick. I believe that this man may have been jealous of AJ and all that he had accomplished and out of spite ended his life.

My prayers are with Kandi right now in her loss and I know and you know that God loves you and he will hold you close over these days of grief and heartache. When you need comfort and arms to surround you God will be there. You have an amazing gift and I know that only time and God's true love will heal your pain. Remain close, remain strong, and know that to God, you will always be close to A.J. and your uncle. God will wipe all those tears from your eyes over time. Again my sincere condolences for you loss.
