Man Sexually Assaults Unconscious Woman on Sidewalk, Whom He Believed Was Dead

Melvin L. Jackson is -- well, we don't have words. The 49-year-old is facing sexual assault charges after he raped a woman on a Kansas City city sidewalk around 11:30am daylight yesterday. Passersby -- who did nothing to stop the attack -- say that they saw the woman curled up in a fetal position, with Melvin on top of her with his pants and underwear around his ankles, having sex with her. Someone did eventually flag down a passing patrol car and Melvin told them -- and we quote -- "I thought that lady was dead." Yes, that apparently makes it a whole lot better. Anywho, the woman she was walking with a friend when she felt light-headed and passed-out in a shaded area. She says that she has no memory of the alleged attack, but that she was told by witnesses that Melvin was having sex with her, and that when she awoke she was no longer wearing her underwear. She was taken to an area hospital for an examination.
